1896 - 1950In 1896 Johann Philipp Josef Welle founded a joinery shop in Paderborn measuring 3 x 4 metres.A few years later business was flourishing and with the help of some employees, he was building all kinds of furniture - mainly bedrooms, wardrobes, tables, and chairs for the "front room".In as early as 1928, 35 employees were making furniture for private customers. In 1935 the two sons, Josef and Johannes Welle, took over the company and in 1936 built a new factory on Wollmarktstraße.This was later where 200 people mass-produced furniture for the trade market.Welle continued to expand, but became caught up in the terrors of War.On the 10th March 1945 almost the whole factory was destroyed during an air-raid.Post-war homes were often limited to just one room with adjoining kitchen and bathroom.A separate bedroom was a scarcity.Welle created the perfect solution with  its pioneering "living room wardrobe".1896 - 1950In 1896 Johann Philipp Josef Welle founded a joinery shop in Paderborn measuring 3 x 4 metres.
Welle created the perfect solution with  its pioneering "living room wardrobe".The 1950sJuly 1949 marked the beginning of the Welle-wardrobe which took off in the 50s proving a huge success all over Germany. This universal piece of furniture not only provided space for laundry and clothes, but also for everything that belonged in the living room. The first model came in three different styles, at an irresistible price. It was a success built to last.Using various woods and finishes more and more models were created in order to meet the enormous market demand. The universal wardrobe was continually updated to a total of 28 different versions by 1965.Within 16 years around 500.000 wardrobes were produced in Paderborn.Whilst Toni Turek became football God, Germany experienced the industrial boom, and the housing conditions improved - the Welle-wardrobe maintained its status as the practical essential for every German living room. All the while another item of furniture was taking Germany by storm: the wall-system.
Cupboards by themselves of joined together became all the rage.Welle didn't hang around and soon offered an array of combinations. This was the beginning of Welle's perfect furnishing solutions for all rooms, primarily for teenagers, students, and guest rooms. The 1950sJuly 1949 marked the beginning of the Welle-wardrobe which took off in the 50s proving a huge success all over Germany. This was the beginning of Welle's perfect furnishing solutions for all rooms, primarily for teenagers, students, and guest rooms. The 1960sThe music revolution began in German households: starting with the Beatles, shortly followed by the Rolling Stones.Teenagers stuck posters of their idols, Mick Jagger and John Lennon onto their wall units.Welle reacted by producing good value cupboards which could be arranged into different combinations - demand was high.Teenagers were no longer called "rowdies", but "twens".Welle followed this trend by introducing the "Twenzimmer Cheri" which continued to be produced well into the 70's, first in the "in" colour white, and later in many other versions.
